Arecibo has collapsed

The untimely death of the Arecibo telescope has been mourned previously on this site, but any hopes of its return have been well and truly quashed.

At five to eight in the morning, Puerto Rican standard time, the last vestiges of the structure's ancient aching cables broke apart all at once. The observatory's dome and antenna crashed into the dish, putting it to rest before the NSF could give it a dignified burial.

We can only hope that it can rest in peace from here, undisturbed by any further mechanical failures.
